These young men told hunting stories - elk, cougar, bear.  On one elk hunt, where Martin tracked the elk for 3 days, somebody else shot the elk while he was tracking it.  Another time, he shot the elk, was gutting it by the side of the road, and two men drove up, pointed their guns and demanded that he give them the meat.  He said his friends would be by soon, to help gut the elk, the man showed up, saw what was happening and pointed his rifle at them, ordering them to leave.  Martin was also jumped by a cougar while he was hunting with a musket-loader (?), a one-shot gun that has heavy smoke.  He shot the cougar point blank, and when the smoke cleared the animal had run off to die.  He followed the blood tracks, to finish her off, and heard the male nearby meowing and snarling.  He had no time to reload his gun, backed away, but came back later for the meat and hide.  These guys were great story-tellers, and gave us two packages of sausage and jerky, home-made, still frozen.
